Identification of auto-antibodies as biomarkers of axial spondyloarthritis
Principal Investigator: Prof. Dr. Veerle Somers, Researcher: Dana Quaden
This project focuses on the identification of auto-antibodies as biomarkers of axial spondyloarthritis (SpA) in order to determine the diagnostic and prognostic potential of candidate biomarkers. Moreover, the biological relevance of the new antigen-antibody responses in the disease process will be studied. Joint tissue, synovial fluid (only in case of medical indication), blood and clinical data of axial SpA patients, patients with other rheumatic/joint related disorders and healthy individuals will be collected in order to study the auto-antibody responses. In addition, the proteins against which the autoantibody reactivity occurs will be characterized. Auto-antibody markers may not only contribute to the improvement of the diagnosis, but also form an essential part in the assessment of the prognosis and therapeutic decisions.
