Glucose tolerance and descriptive factors for insulin resistance in patients with heart failure

During the last 50 years, the western world is confronted with a progressive increase in prevalence of the metabolic syndrome, which is characterized among other things by insulin resistance and diabetes. However, with an aging population a different problem is emerging that is also related to the metabolic syndrome. At the moment, the prevalence of chronic heart failure, which is strongly linked to insulin resistance, has reached ~ 30% of seniors of 65 years and older. The prevalence of insulin resistance in the population of patients with heart failure is estimated to be more than 30%, excluding the patients with diabetes. This co-morbidity has a detrimental influence on the NYHA functional class, and on life expectancy.
The proposed study aims at determining a frame of reference, set a standard, which can be used to determine the effects of intervention studies. In case of patients with heart failure no extensive analyzes are described for the oral glucose tolerance test (including the area under the curve for glucose and insulin), linked to the body composition (DEXA measurement), muscle strength and parameters from echocardiography. Moreover, the current study also wants to compare these factors with regard to the individual pathologies of systolic and diastolic heart failure.
