Influence of physical activity on muscle fiber characteristics of patients with multiple sclerosis

Principal Investigator: Prof. Dr. Bert Op't Eijnde, Researcher: Dr. Inez Wens

The purpose of this study is 3-fold:

  1. Determine whether the muscle fiber characteristics and muscle metabolism of persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) differ from that of healthy controls and determined the effect of a single effort (using muscle biopsies).
  2. Investigate  the effect of a 12-week during combined- and high intensity interval training (HIIT) on muscle fiber characteristics and muscle metabolism and determine  the effect of physical activity on exercise capacity, muscle strength and body composition in persons with MS.
  3. Determine the effect of HIIT on the development of insulin resistance using oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in persons with MS (previous study of our group showed that a combined training has no positive effect on the occurrence of insulin resistance in persons with MS).
